NWA 13259 was a big surprise to me. It was picked out of a small selection of uncut lunar meteorites, offered by a morrocan dealer at the Munich Mineral Show in October 2018. The small selection of light gray to medium gray looking lunar meteorites were supposed to be “paired to NWA 11273”. One sample, a distinct darker looking 24.4 g stone attracted my interest and I thought that this little lunar stone is different to the other uncut lunar stones.
After cutting and polishing and visual comparison to “confirmed” NWA 11273 material, it showed no similarities between the dark lunar meteorite and the typical light gray colored NWA 11273 material. The little lunar was worth to be classified. After thin section preparation, it turned out to be a (polymict) very colorful lunar regolith breccia with partly melted matrix and small, max. 1 mm sized, white feldspar inclusions.
My thanks goes to Addi Bischoff, IfP, for the detailed classification work. For more information click the MetBul link above.
Pic 1 to 3: the little main mass (still 15.38 g) of NWA 13259
Pic 4: colorful thin section of NWA 13259, polarized light
Pic 5: one covered thin section of NWA 11273 and three covered thin sections of NWA 13259
Pic 6: visual comparison between typical NWA 11273 (left side) and NWA 13259 (right side)
Pic 7: thin section of NWA 11273, polarized light, no colors exept white to gray
The little NWA 13259 is a center piece in my small lunar meteorite collection.
