A recent discussion on the List regarding origins of such craters on irons sparked me to send this picture in. It begs the question, "How were these formed?" My most likely conclusion is simply that other pieces banged into each other upon explosion, but wouldn't this have resulted in scrapes rather than a "crater" ?

The dynamics involved in the explosion would have caused any number of shapes in the shrapnel.

Richard, great specimen - I mean really great. Would love to see a post somewhere of craters on other specimens.

Looks similar to the crater formed by a bullet hitting a steel plate.
