2021 Fall Date Project

The MPOD Caretakers want to present meteorite falls on their fall dates. For example, Sikhote Aline on 12 February.

This Project will not dip into the MPOD archives so the Caretakers will appreciate anything you can contribute.

To reserve a date just let us know. Thank you in advance :)

Find/Fall Anniversary
1160 gram individual.   L6

TKW 51.5 kg. Observed fall 25 November 1943, Dewey County, Oklahoma.

Frank writes:
27 stones were recovered that together weighed 52 Kg.

Photo 1. Happy Thanksgiving! Leedey meteorites fell on Thanksgiving day exactly 78 years ago (November 25, 1945).

Photo 2. This Leedey individual weighs 1160 grams and shows two collection numbers - Nininger #489.11 and Monnig #M39.7. Both Harvey Nininger and Oscar Monnig collaborated in the recover of stones from this fall that occurred in Oklahoma during World War II. Twenty-seven stones have been recovered from a strewnfield that stretched 11 miles long. The fall has a TKW of 52 kg. The largest stone weighed 20.4 kg and was cut in half and divided between the two men. All the meteorites were recovered in the 1940s except one last stone that was recovered in 2011 by Ruben Garcia.

Photo's 3 & 4. Other views of the individual that show its shallow regmaglypts and angular, almost rectangular, nature.

Photo 5. An interior view of the Leedey meteorite from a 47.9 gram slice.

From the minute Jim Kriegh cut my Golden Rule meteorite (from Gold Basin field) I always said that it looked like Leedey, inside and out. I already had a Leedey slice in my collection. Thank you and ditto Alexander's note!
