2021 Fall Date Project

The MPOD Caretakers want to present meteorite falls on their fall dates. For example, Sikhote Aline on 12 February.

This Project will not dip into the MPOD archives so the Caretakers will appreciate anything you can contribute.

To reserve a date just let us know. Thank you in advance :)

The Eye Candy of Hexing Olivines and Micro Tricks and Treats

In hexagon profile, orthorhombic olivine treats us with its third refractive index and its high birefringence. At very high pressures olivine tricks us shockingly by masquerading as cubic Majorite and cubic Ringwoodite; both polymorphs are found in meteorites. Alas, with only one refractive index there is no birefringence and no interference colors unless strained.

I cannot claim that all of Image 4 is mine. Sarah's toffees are mine but Paul had his hand in the candy jar.

One hexagonal crystal, gray on the first picture, purple on the second one, has 2 eyes a nose and a very pointy head (or pointy hat). Perfect for Halloween. Thank you Bill.
