2021 Fall Date Project

The MPOD Caretakers want to present meteorite falls on their fall dates. For example, Sikhote Aline on 12 February.

This Project will not dip into the MPOD archives so the Caretakers will appreciate anything you can contribute.

To reserve a date just let us know. Thank you in advance :)

7.1 grams.   L4

TKW 8.35 kg. Fall not observed. Found 1972, Logan County, Arkansas, USA.

From the MetBul:
A single 8.346 kg stone was found by Daniel Michaelson, a 12-year-old boy, while hunting for arrowheads with his father.

Bernd writes:
When Allen Shaw stopped for gas and coffee at a small filling station in Arkansas many years ago, he approached a group of deer hunters and showed them a 3 kg individual of the Eads, Colorado chondrite. One of the hunters, named Danny Michaelson, remembered that he had found such a stone when he was 12 years old and that this stone, although rusty colored now, was still in his possession. Shaw asked him to break off a thumbnail-sized piece and mail it to him so that he could have a look at it. When a 180 gram "chip" arrived in the mail, Shaw instantly realized this was a genuine chondrite.

Great story Bernd, to me a lot of the stories associated with the find/falls are just as interesting as the Meteorites themselves.
