2021 Fall Date Project

The MPOD Caretakers want to present meteorite falls on their fall dates. For example, Sikhote Aline on 12 February.

This Project will not dip into the MPOD archives so the Caretakers will appreciate anything you can contribute.

To reserve a date just let us know. Thank you in advance :)

Find/Fall Anniversary
4.335 grams total.   Martian (nakhlite)

TKW 10 kg. Observed fall 28 June 1911, Al Buhayrah, Egypt.

Herbert writes:
After a column of white smoke was seen in the sky and a loud explosion was heared, the Nakla meteorite shower fell on this day, 111 years ago, in the Nile delta region of Egypt. The arrival of the type specimen of the Nakhlites has almost gone unnoticed by the scientific world, were it not for the farmer Mohammed Ali Effendi Hakin, who reported the occurence to the "El Ahali" newspaper (including the note that one of the specimens "fell on a dog at Denshal, leaving it like ashes in the moment.")

About 40 stones, with a total weight 10 kg were recovered, the largest having a mass of 1813 g.

Photo 1 shows a 0.498 g specimen on the strewnfield map from John Ball's report "The Meteorite of El Nakhla el Baharia" (1912).

Photo 2 shows a closeup of the same fragent.

Photo 3 shows my largest Nakhla collection piece, a 70g box of Nakhla tobacco with Apple flavour. ;o)

Photo 4 shows the 377g Nakhla "sugar cube" on display at the Natural History Museum in Vienna, Austria. (It is the policy of the NHM to allow visitors to photograph the exhibits, but only for personal use. Pictures cannot be used for commercial purposes without written permission. The MPOD is in the personal use category so showing this picture here is allowed.)

Of course there Is a Dog, I Actually Saw that dog {in a picture} and he had a crater right on top of his head. Really. Thanks Herbert, nice piece, and also to be the custodian of such a rare specimen.
