2021 Fall Date Project

The MPOD Caretakers want to present meteorite falls on their fall dates. For example, Sikhote Aline on 12 February.

This Project will not dip into the MPOD archives so the Caretakers will appreciate anything you can contribute.

To reserve a date just let us know. Thank you in advance :)

Find/Fall Anniversary

TKW 3055 grams. Fall observed 23 June 2009, in Cochise County, Arizona, USA.

Jack writes:
On the evening of Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at 9:22 local time, witnesses in Southern Arizona gazed in awe as a meteoric fireball traversed the sky at cosmic velocity. Jack Schrader, after gathering numerous reports from eye witnesses in the area, triangulated the collected data and recovered the first stone, a 155.6 gram individual at 6:20 pm on Thursday, June 25, 2009, just 44 hours 58 minutes after the occurrence of the fall. On Friday, June 26, Jack’s father, Chuck Schrader, recovered the second stone of the fall, a 99.4 gram individual at 10:39 am.

These first two meteorites are pictured on the cover of the second edition (in color) of "The Whetstone Mountains Monograph" which was completed by the author, Dave Gheesling, just prior to his passing. Dave is silhouetted on the dust cover of the monograph on the right with Jack Schrader following behind on the left. Dust cover photo credit of Sean Murray.

I feel fortunate to have received my monograph from Dave. None of us ever imagined his passing.
