2021 Fall Date Project

The MPOD Caretakers want to present meteorite falls on their fall dates. For example, Sikhote Aline on 12 February.

This Project will not dip into the MPOD archives so the Caretakers will appreciate anything you can contribute.

To reserve a date just let us know. Thank you in advance :)

84 grams.   Winonaite

TKW 390 grams. Fall not observed. Purchased October 2020 from a dealer in Tindouf, Algeria.

Matthias writes:
Individual 84 g in as found condition, one of 6 pieces. Shock stage 1, weathering low.

This individual has an interesting blocky shape, allowing several different, distinct perspectives of view. Completely covered with rather fresh brownish-black fusion crust. Abundant tiny grains of iron at the surface. What strikes me most, and what I've never seen before, are the prominent, vividly structured iron aggregates visible at one of its sides. Plastically protruding the stony surface like in high relief. Looks like the iron had poured out of the stone and got frozen in the very moment. The appearance is like hammered silver.

For me it's a really magical little piece, reminding me of what I once have read about a possible relation between its namesake Winona and the Canyon Diablo iron - unfortunately I don't remember where exactly. Of course I'll be thankful for each kind of proposal and advice.

The metal likely ablates or is released at a different rate, allowing the metal patches to standout in "relief" from the rest of the stone.

Thanks for your comments. Does anyone have any idea how these particular formations of massive iron aggregates can appear, at the surface?
