2021 Fall Date Project

The MPOD Caretakers want to present meteorite falls on their fall dates. For example, Sikhote Aline on 12 February.

This Project will not dip into the MPOD archives so the Caretakers will appreciate anything you can contribute.

To reserve a date just let us know. Thank you in advance :)

TKW 303 kg. Observed fall 4 March 1960, Bruderheim, Alberta, Canada.

Murray writes:
On March 4th at 01:06 am a bright meteor streaked across the Alberta skies and deposited about 700 stones with a total mass of 300 kg in the farming community just north of the town of Bruderheim Alberta. Residents were rattled out of their beds by the sonic booms of the meteor’s arrival. In the morning some people found meteorites ony a short distance from their front doors. The largest stone weighed 27 kg.

Dr. Folinsbee, Chairman of the Department of Geology, University of Alberta coordinated the investigation and collection of stones from the fall. This windfall allowed the University of Alberta to develop the largest meteorite collection of Canadian universities through trades of this valuable material. At present the University still retains 145 kg of this fall.

I only have one Canyon Diablo iron, one piece of meteorite shale from the crater, and a very small piece of Nantan. But, if I had more pieces to show, I would flood the MPOD queue with pictures of them. Paul would be asking me to stop : ). Weather is getting better, who knows, maybe I can go out and find something. : )

I can't imagine walking up on a 27 kg chunk of something like that. Yes, awesome for sure.
