2021 Fall Date Project

The MPOD Caretakers want to present meteorite falls on their fall dates. For example, Sikhote Aline on 12 February.

This Project will not dip into the MPOD archives so the Caretakers will appreciate anything you can contribute.

To reserve a date just let us know. Thank you in advance :)

TKW 303 kg. Observed fall 4 March 1960, Bruderheim, Alberta, Canada.

Bernd writes:
When the detonating Bruderheim bolide entered the Earth’s atmosphere on March 4, 1960, it created a flash that was visible for 200 miles. The detonations resembled a sonic boom that could be heard over an area of 2,000 square miles. The fireball travelled in the direction of the Earth's revolutionary path making it easier for fragments to survive their fiery passage through the atmosphere. More than 300 kg fell as individuals within a well-defined ellipse of fall (5.6 by 3.6 km) and the larger individuals were located near the south-east end of this ellipse. The largest individual recovered weighed 31 kg. Some meteorites came down so fast that they plowed pits as deep as 30 cm into the frozen earth.

I purchased the partially crusted partslice from Mike Farmer in 2003 and the thin section comes from Jnmczurich (acquired in 2008). In xpol. light it features a surprisingly well delineated, light gray round chondrule with a thick igneous rim.

Happy Birthday Bruderheim! I purchased a similar thick part slice from Mike about the same time. Perhaps they were brothers.
