2021 Fall Date Project

The MPOD Caretakers want to present meteorite falls on their fall dates. For example, Sikhote Aline on 12 February.

This Project will not dip into the MPOD archives so the Caretakers will appreciate anything you can contribute.

To reserve a date just let us know. Thank you in advance :)

200.7 grams.   Iron, IIIAB

TKW 22.39 kg. Fall not observed. Plowed up sometime during 1953 - 1958. Turtle River, Beltrami County, Minnesota, USA.

jnmczurich writes:
Turtle River, little wedged fullslice 200.7 g with painted number H92.15 from former Glen Huss, Denver. Unfortunately without the related Glen Huss collection lable. Dimensions of the slice: 111 x 57 x (4-7) mm.

Recrystallized medium octahedrite, bandwith 1.10 ±0.20 mm, with well developed straight long kamacite lamellae (L/W ̴15). Turtle River is one of my favorite IIIAB irons in collection (former classification: IIIB).

Although the iron does not show an alpha-2 zone, i.e. the outer zone is already weathered-off, the iron is very stable and has not shown any signs of rusting for many years.

Received in exchange from an european University collection in 1994.

Pic 1 and 2 – both sides of the Turtle River slice

Pic 3 – Kamacite lamellae with recognizable recristallization (fine grains with different light reflection). Plessite fields are dark

Pic 4 – Comb or finger plessite field, embedded between kamacite bars

Pic 5 – Parallel arrangement of kamacite bars in different orientation. Small angular schreibersite inclusion inside of a kamacite bar

Pic 6 – Kamacite bars and various plessite fields

The detail images always show a field of about 8 x 5.5 mm.
