119.7 gram full slice.   Ureilite

NWA 10870 - Ureilite melt rock

Here is a meteorite with a classification so unique it has never been heard of so far. It’s a one-of-a-kind ureilite. It is "shock molten" and thoroughly recrystallized. The recrystallized grains are so fine that the grain size can only be recognized under high magnification (see photo 4, taken with an electron microscope). That’s why you don’t see the usual, colorful minerals when viewing the thin section in cross-polarized light. It is only a few minor areas displaying minimal color changes – another hint for the extraordinary nature of this material.

Thanks Hanno (with Paul's dedicated support) for sharing your beautiful high contrast photomicroscopy(?) image of this interesting piece of SS evolution. It is inspiring on a bleak and rainy day here to contemplate such a violent formation from a chair... and appreciate this rarity!

Among the ureilites with a mosaicized texture that C.A. Goodrich mentions in Table 1 (p. 329) are the following: Goalpara, Y74154, ALHA81101, and LEW86216 * all of them highly shocked.

From your images and reading the official classification I must say that I fail to see what feature, in this sample, it is that has never been heard of so far. For instance, Goodrich, C. A. (1992). Ureilites: A critical review. Meteoritics, 27(4) state that: "Several ureilites display a mosaicized texture with much smaller grain size which is probably a result of of shock brecciation and/or recrystallization". This in my opinion is exactly what we see here. Congratulations on a nice ureilite sample though!

Very unusual ureilite. And thanks for a beautiful endcut of this number!!

Some of the dull looking ones can be the most interesting when you get up close...excellent!
