Yes, Bernd, but there is more to the story of Iron Creek. It had been known forever by the Indians Cree who knew it was special and made offerings to it. They also had the tradition that if anything happened to it something terrible would happen to the tribe. The whole mass was moved to the Museum of Toronto anyway, and an epidemic of smallpox decimated the tribe. |

The original weight of 175 kg is probably in error! The meteorite was re-weighed in 1999 and presently the main mass is 145.25 kilos (according to an email I received from Richard Herd in 2002). Among other things Richard wrote: "Not enough has been distributed to account for 30 kilos, nor is there enough cutting to suggest that amount was removed, in fact far less is indicated, maybe as little as a kilogram". |
