Images from a 1455 gram end-cut.   Iron, ungrouped

TKW 4.91 kg. Fall not observed. Purchased in March 2009 from a Moroccan dealer in Rissani.

Expert etch by Andreas Gren.

These patterns are characteristic of iron meteorites and pallasites. They are produced by polishing a cut surface and then etching the surface in a dilute solution of nitric acid or ferric chloride.

A good discussion of the subject can be found here.

Paul writes:
I was experimenting with my new macro lens and took these close ups. Photos 2, 3, and 4 are selected areas of the main photo. Note the scale bars below each photo.

From the MetBul, concerning the classification:
Ungrouped, plessitic octahedrite. Although Ni content is similar to IB, IIC, and IIIAB groups, Ga and Ir concentrations are outside limits for these groups. The texture shows characteristics of both medium and plessitic octahedrites.

I agree, Mendy. The surface is absolutely mind boggling under magnification. An inexhaustible etch, to paraphrase a comment from Gourgues Denis on August 29.

I am fortunate enough to own a slice and let me say that the pics as great as they are do not do this iron justice. By far one of my favorite Widmanstatten patterns.

Andreas, you are correct. I purchased the specimen in August 2010 and it was not classified until August 2012. Thank you for pointing this out.

Hi Paul, this pattern looks very similar to the strange pattern of NWA 7335. Are you sure, that it is unclassified?

Remarkable etch and excellent photograph to capture an almost three dimensional perspective. The negative sloping lines appear to twist around themselves.
