What is a thin section?       What do all the colors mean?
Thin Section.   Pallasite, PMG-an

TKW 2.3 tons. Fall not observed. Found 1924, Northern Territory, Australia.

Bill writes:
Portions of this pallasite classed meteorite show extreme terrestrial weathering as evidenced in some the photomicrographic images below. Again, as in a previous MPOD submission, Coldwater, hematite is clearly evident.

Images 1 and 2 are from a thin section received from Russ Kempton. Image 1 is viewed simultaneously in raking white reflected and transmitted white light (one polar on each light source). Photomicrograph 2 is imaged in transmitted white light with crossed linear polars without any accessory plates. Coloration of the olivine is dependent on the relative nickel:iron ratio for a given sample thickness and crystal grain orientation.

Images 3 and 4 are imaged with crossed polars with transmitted white light and no accessory plates. This thin section was purchased from Anne Black. Is there a dragon in image 4?

Hi Anne and all, I also see a beefy teradackle in the thinsection shots.
