What is a thin section?       What do all the colors mean?
  Iron

TKW 18.4 kg. Fall not observed. Found 1923, Kansas, USA.

When teaching polarized light microscopy to some of my independent study students some would ask "what should I see?" My answer would be "what do you see"!

This heavily weathered meteorite specimen in thin section was obtained from Ann Black in November 2009. She acquired it in trade from another meteorite dealer, Edwin Thompson. Labeled as "Iron / Nickel Oxide" and "Coldwater" suggested a must-have for this chemist. In reflected raking and transmitted white light both the oxide(s) and the remaining metallic phase are evident (one polar present). With only transmitted white light (one polar), one can easily see why hematite has the name that it does.

Exactly, John and John. And on Pic #2 I see a river of lava, just like what they are experiencing in Iceland.

Wow JD, before I read your reply, I thought Exactly same. I'm syncing to the collective--save me. Thank you Bill, I too enjoy scoping TS's. The only words anyone within earshot hear from me is "wow, oh wow".
