204.4 grams. 98 x 59 x 23 mm. Martian (shergottite) TKW 2.85 kg. Fall not observed. Purchased 2014, Algeria. Darryl writes:This specimen was cut from a Martian meteorite found in the Sahara in 2021. It did not take the short route to Earth; based on an analysis of the cosmic radiation this meteorite traveled around the Sun for more than a million years. Dr. Anthony Irving provided the analysis. The cut and polished surface reveals a diabasic texture with prismatic clinopyroxene and lathe-like grains of maskelynite — the impact glass which engulfed tiny volumes of Martian atmosphere before solidifying — which are scattered throughout. Affixed to the meteorite’s textured exterior surface are patches of a tan to chocolate caliche, the result of this meteorite’s residency in the Sahara before it was recovered. Obtained from Rob Wesel, this is a really beautiful specimen and it’s available at NO RESERVE at Sotheby’s upcoming Meteorite Auction which closes Wednesday, July 27th.
