Witnessed fall 15th Feb. 2013, 09:200 local time, minutes before sunrise.
Recently I ran into this Chelyabinsk stone, a good opportunity to round off the Cheli-group of the collection: egg-shaped, fresh individual 41.57 g, recovered in the first few days after the fall. Black and partially foamy melting crust, a small natural window showing the light interior with structures of shock-melting.

The fall of Chelyabinsk, documented by thousands of videos (here for example), was a once in a lifetime event, caused by the entry of a 20 m. Near Earth Asteroid (NEA) in the atmosphere. The airburst, equivalent to the blast yield of 400–500 kilotons of TNT, was thirtyfold brighter than the sun. About 7.200 buildings were damaged by the compression wave of atmospheric fragmentation, about 1.500 people got hurt. The 570 kg main mass was finally recovered about half a year after the event by divers at the ground of Lake Chebarkul. |
