Featured in the current Christie’s Deep Impact Meteorite Auction is The Heart of Space. This unique Sikhote-Alin originated from the largest meteorite shower of the last several thousand years. The shockwaves associated with its February 12, 1947 arrival in Siberia shattered windows and uprooted trees. Eyewitnesses believed the world was coming to an end. Among the meteorites to land on Earth that day was the current example in the shape of a heart. Its shape and texture is due to fragmentation in the asteroid belt where it calved from its parent body along crystalline planes with another round of sculpting that results from it having experiencing temperatures of up temperatures of up to 3000° F during its fiery plunge through Earth’s atmosphere. The variegated caramel patina is a terrestrial artifact from exposure to the elements prior to recovery. 185 x 231 x 119mm (7.33 x 9 x 4.66 inches) and 10.12 kg (22.29 pounds).
