LL5-6 TKW 6.03 kg. Fall not observed. Found 2002, Adrar, Mauritania. jnmczurich writes:I bought this lovely looking individual as an unclassified NWA chondrite at the Hamburg Mineral Fair, exactly 20 years ago. Nice thumbprints, fresh appearance, compact shape with only minor cracks on the outer face. It was a perfect Christmas present to give myself in December 2002. It still has its original Christmas 2002 bow in my display. NWA 1717 was probably found in the Atar region in Mauretania. I got this information from the Moroccan dealer that time in Hamburg/Germany. I cut off an end section for classification plus two thin slices. The slice next to the classification sample was given to my long-time friend Alex Seidel, who unfortunately passed away in June 2020, and the slice found its way back to my collection of meteorites in September 2020. The second and bit larger slice was cut in smaller sections for thin section preparation and to give small parts to other collectors. NWA 1717 (Atar) is a heavy brecciated LL5-6 chondrite with fragments of impact melt, shock veins (S4) and very low weathering (W1). I never thought to cut off more slices and will keep it as an almost complete individual. I think this is a good decision (from my point of view). Almost complete individual of 5'940 g (185 x 155 x 125 mm) Full slice 14.6 g (53.5 x 41.5 x 2-3 mm) NWA 1717 thin section
