What is a thin section?       What do all the colors mean?
  Achondrite-ung

TKW 22.86 kg. Fall not observed. Found May 2020, Adrar, Algeria.

John writes:
Erg Chech 002 Ungrouped achondrite thin section. This sample is 30mm long.

Brown staining is from weathering of metal and iron sulfide. What looks like a hole in the sample is, in fact, a hole. It has a thin lining of terrestrial calcite, here in shades of brown in cross-polarized light. The groundmass is pyroxenes and feldspars of varying compositions. In XPL the feldspar is colored white through shades of gray. Megacrysts are pyroxene of varying compositions. The sections through megacrysts in this slide range from one to five millimeters across.
