After Jim Kriegh had discovered the first two fragments of the Gold Basin meteorite on November 24, 1995, Jim Kriegh himself, John Blennert and Ingrid Monrad began a systematic and regular search for more pieces 24 years ago.

The Gold Basin meteorite exploded over more than 50 square miles of Mohave County in northwest Arizona at the end of the last Ice Age. When compared to Holbrook, the fall site of the Gold Basin meteorite is estimated to be two-to-four times larger than that of the Holbrook strewnfield.

The airburst event was probably similar to that of Chelyabinsk but with some 68 meters in pre-atmospheric diameter, the Gold Basin meteoroid is less than half the diameter of the Chelyabinsk meteoroid.

 11/24/2019 6:14:19 PM		 Classy and Honorable...thanks Bernd. I was lucky enough to met Jim and Twink at the Tucson show in 2004. Jim Kreigh took me(JD) aside at Geoff's and Steve's dinner/party and very kindly told me that I (my computer) gave him his worst "computer virus" he ever had. He wasn't mad, but he wanted me to know. Love it, I couldn't be more honored by the distinction. And of course Twink was awesome as you would expect.

For the 20th anniversary Gold Basin hunt in 2015 I was present and I would say 3/4 of the attendees had not met Jim Kriegh but were anxious to hear stories of our hunting days there. It was heartwarming to see the interest and also wonderful of the organizers who had the hats and coin made to commemorate the event. Jim used to say people will be finding GB meteorites for a hundred years. 25th anniversary hunt next year anyone?
