I have a picture of the Salles specimen in Alain Carion's collection, I wish I could post it here. And no it does not look at all like the one in this picture.

The 5th edition of the Catalogue of Meteorites (2000) still lists it as an H6 chondrite (veined; black) but Rochette P. et al. (2003) classify it as an L5: ROCHETTE P. et al. (2003) Magnetic classification of stony meteorites: 1. Ordinary chondrites (MAPS 38-02, 2003, 251-268).

I changed the classification to L5.

and it fell most certainly on March 8, 1798 (12 march is official date but is false - see my book for additional details)

I am not familiar with Salles, but the description is incorrect. It is not an L7, it is an L5.

strange, doesn't look like any Salles specimens I saw (MNHN Paris, Ecole des Mines Paris, private collectors). Are you sure of provenance of this specimen ?
