Approximately 100 x 120 x 30 mm.   Impact Crater / Shattercone

Age 142.5 ± 0.8 Ma. Northern Territory, Australia.

I think shatter cones are fascinating structures, and testify to the magnitude of forces involved with a sizeable strike. And if it’s correct that the crater would have been 22km across originally, I think that counts as "sizeable". The marking that looks like a coffee stain is part of the structure itself, and as its lines are not disrupted by the cones would seem to have been deposited after the strike.

 10/6/2017 3:06:45 AM		 Nice to see a shatter cone from there. I was there many years ago and have various samples of brecciated rocks but never did find a shatter cone.
