Approximately 100 x 120 x 30 mm.   Impact Crater / Shattercone

Age 142.5 ± 0.8 Ma. Northern Territory, Australia.

I think shatter cones are fascinating structures, and testify to the magnitude of forces involved with a sizeable strike. And if it’s correct that the crater would have been 22km across originally, I think that counts as "sizeable". The marking that looks like a coffee stain is part of the structure itself, and as its lines are not disrupted by the cones would seem to have been deposited after the strike.

Catalogue of Meteorites, 4th edition, 1985, p. 431: "A circular cryptoexplosion structure approximately 22 km in diameter, with raised rim and well developed shattercones ..."

Nice to see a shatter cone from there. I was there many years ago and have various samples of brecciated rocks but never did find a shatter cone.
