TKW 150 kg. Observed fall 14 December 1807, near Weston, Connecticut.

 


Roberto writes:
Weston fell on December 14th 1807 in Fairfield County, Connecticut. It is an H4 chondrite with a TKW of 150kg, according to metbul. As a Connecticut resident, this meteorite has been on my want list for a very long time. I have been waiting patiently for the perfect piece and this is it.

It was deaccessioned from the Center for Meteorite Studies at Arizona State University on October 15th, 2019. The specimen has a little crust along one of its sides and is marked with the ASU catalog number 238.2. This number can also be found in The Nininger Collection of Meteorites (The American Meteorite Museum, 1950).

The Weston meteorite has been in many publications and it is said that Thomas Jefferson skeptically remarked the following about the Weston fall:"It would be easier to believe that two Yankee professors would lie than that stones would fall from heaven". While Marvin (2011) writes in his book that President Jefferson never said this, it still tickles me to think that TJ was the first to utter the words, "not a meteorite".

 10/21/2019 10:40:50 AM		 Dr. Ursula B. Marvin, may she R.I.P. President Jefferson has more attributed quotes to him than Einstein, total B.S. Jefferson directly had communication with info on the L'Aigle fall a few years earlier, and was light years ahead of the phony quote which wouldn't die!... & first appeared in when, the 1880's?
