2021 Fall Date Project

The MPOD Caretakers want to present meteorite falls on their fall dates. For example, Sikhote Aline on 12 February.

This Project will not dip into the MPOD archives so the Caretakers will appreciate anything you can contribute.

To reserve a date just let us know. Thank you in advance :)

10.7 gram slice.   Pallasite, ungrouped

TKW 10 kg. Fall not observed. Purchased 2021 from a meteorite dealer in Mauritania.

Roberto writes:
Hassi el Biod 002 (HeB 002) was found earlier this year near Ouargla, Algeria. Metbul lists its total known weight as 10 kilograms and its classification as pallasite, ungrouped.

While HeB 002 shares some similarities in O-isotopic composition with Vermillion, and they both plot within the same field as the acapulcoite-lodranite clan, HeB 002 is distinct and thought to have originated from an entirely different parent body from any other pallasite (Weir, 2021).

The etched surface of this pallasite is what drew me to this meteorite in the first place. I really like this 10.7g part slice because it exhibits that unique etch and has some beautiful, slightly translucent, angular, red/orange olivine. I am pretty excited to see what future research and discoveries come from this find!
