41.09 grams. H5
TKW 20 kg. Observed fall 1 January 1869, near Uppsala, Sweden.
Herbert writes:
The Hessle meteorite shower occurred on new years day of 1869 at 12:30 pm, near Uppsala, Sweden. The strewnfield was 16 km long and 5km wide. In total, about 500 stones with a total mass of 25 kg were recovered, though it is estimated that about 1000 stones with a total weight of 50 kg to 60 kg fell. Many of the smaller stones - some with a weight of less than 0.1 grams - were recovered from the ice of a frozen lake.
This specimen (ex Riksmuseet Stockholm, Sweden) weights 41.09 grams. It is pictured on a map of the strewnfield, as published in Dr. Aristides Brezina work "Die Meteoriten vor und nach ihrer Ankunft auf die Erde" ("The Meteorites before and after their arrival on Earth") from 1893. |
