Darryl writes:
This is an exhibition I conceived of about three years ago which is now finally up at the Portland Maine International Jetport (PWM). It’s the first meteorite installation of its kind at any major transportation hub in the world. It just opened this past Tuesday and is contracted to be up for five years during which time airport management estimates more than 10 million people will see it. (Whether they stop to look and wander up — that’s another matter!) The installation was sponsored by the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum in Bethel — which has one of the more outstanding meteorite collections anywhere — and don’t take my word for it, ask 🤔….Roberto Vargas. 😉

At Tuesday's opening brief speeches were given by the President of the Meteoritical Society, Dr. Nancy Chabot; associate professor at Colby College, Dr. Tasha Dunn — the only meteoriticist in Maine; Mars rover operator, Dr. Aileen Yingst of the Planetary Science Institute; Halsey Frank representing Senator Susan Collins’ office and myself (Photo 5 from the left are Dr. Aileen Yingst, Darryl Pitt, Dr. Tasha Dunn, Dr. Nancy Chabot).

There was also a great deal of "media-write" coverage — close to 500 hits around the world and counting.

The meteorites displayed are from the MMGM’s collection apart from most notably the Gibeon better known as The Scream (Photo 1 ). Among the more iconic anthropomorphic meteorites, I loaned The Scream out for the purpose of this exhibition. The other meteorites on display are — and yes, I’m keenly aware there are no chondrites (which will make an appearance halfway through the run):

Amgala 001 (5.27 kg)   Martian (shergottite)   Photo 2
Gadamis 004 (148g)   Lunar (anorth)
Imilac (3.44 kg)   Pallasite, PMG
Jikharra 001 (10.4 kg)   Eucrite-melt breccia
NWA 8641(1.92 kg)   Lunar (feldsp. breccia)
NWA 10416 (86.4g)   Martian
NWA 10894 (448g)   Eucrite-cm
NWA 11057 (326g)   Martian (shergottite)
NWA 11616 (62g)   Lunar
NWA 12691 (415g)   Lunar (feldsp. breccia)
NWA 12696 (521g)   Eucrite-melt breccia
NWA 13276 (38.4g)   Martian (shergottite)
NWA 16546 prov. (42.7 kg)   currently the Second Largest Moon Rock on Earth   Photo 3
Saricicek (325g)   Howardite
Seymchan (8.02 kg)   Pallasite, PMG
Sueilila 002 (329g)   Martian (shergottite)
Tirhert (443g)   Eucrite-unbr

Hope you enjoy. Portland is a terrific town … in the summer 😉 However, if you ski the Museum is in Bethel just minutes from Sunday River.

Thanks, again! Truly! 😊 🙏 As is said, necessity is indeed the mother of invention. If a great museum opens in rural Maine will anyone see it? Yes*if encouraged. And celebrating those objects with the most frequent flier miles in the solar system belong in an airport! 😉

Mr. Pitt, Your accomplishment of establishing this First meteorite outreach/knowledge kiosk type stop-in at an International airport is a Great concept; hopefully to be expanded. FYI, I do have an unoccupied pedestal which could comfort the Scream should the need arise. Great outcome Sir! And, thanks to All involved.

Bravo! Great selection of pieces (other than missing a chondrite :-) with pieces to awe both people seeing their first meteorite and the most jaded meteorite collector!

great exhibition Daryl...would love to see it. I am glad you told us about the meteorites, I had no idea what I was looking at for Pic #2 (shergottite). It is impactite/tektite looking.

HI, Thank you so much, everyone, for your gracious, supportive comments. So appreciated! 🙏 As I had mentioned, this was an idea I had some time ago that took a while to come to fruition. Given both the municipal and airport bureaucracies, it wasn't simple, but to everyone's credit we finally got there! While a number of people were involved in this effort, most importantly, this would not have been possible without the passionate support of Dr. Lawrence Stifler and the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum. And i assure you this will be receiving countless eyeballs in large part as it faces where the line forms for Starbucks. 😊 Thank you, again! And thank you, Paul, for MPOD!

Darryl, thank you! What you have done can only be considered "out of this world outreach". This one installation will play a significant role in not only bringing more awareness to science but to our beloved hobby as well. Congratulations.

Wonderful, Darryl. I'm pretty sure this temptation would make me miss my plane in Portland. As it is not mainly a scientific show I like the concept of exposing not so many but spectacular center pieces. Majestic!
