3.4 kg.   unclassified

Matthias writes:
El Alamat II -or- "The Little Khan"

Most probably an ordinary chondrite (L5). Found May 11th 2009 by members of a German-Russian expedition through one of the most remote and least explored deserts of the northern hemisphere.

Beautiful 3.4 kg mass of triangular shape and elegant pagoda-like curves. Flawless fusion crust and broad, shallow regmaglypts on one side. As the finder stated, the meteorite "lay on top of a small hill and it was literally visible for miles”. A bit later and not far from this place a much bigger mass (> 20 kg) of the same meteorite was found, the majestic "Big Khan" (El Alamat I). The two deep black masses in a bright surrounding, obviously placed post hoc on top of a ridge, might have served as land marks (alamat: signal stone) - easily seen by a camel-rider even over a long distance.

Highly recommended reading: The whole story 'Uncharted Sands - The Find of a Landmark Meteorite' on Dr. Svend Buhl's website. Thanks to Svend's intervention the Little Khan has been in my collection for eight years.

In-situ photo by Pjotr M., Moscow; Studio photos by Dr. Svend Buhl, Hamburg.
