A most unusual Christmas tree hiding in a forest of silicates! ;-) Thank you Bill.

Bernd, the mottled appearance is probably due to the "stringy" mucilagenous looking silicates overlaying the ground. This can be readily seen in a transmitted + reflected raking light (both unpolarized) image. An olympus BH2 microscope using both a nominal 10 power objective and photo eyepiece along with a Nikon camera an coupler produced the resulting magnified image.

Merry Christmas everybody! Where does this mottled appearance come from?
