the sticker residue idea came to me after I wrote that note. I have removed those before. I did look harder at the area and it does have structure, but seems to more linear (one direction of crystals) than the rest of the piece.

That looks like the stain left by the glue on the back of a label. :-(

John - as I recall, the piece could use a refinishing. I remember think, when I was there, that the circular feature looks like a stain.

the large undefined structure in the upper right hand corner is interesting. Is that a round nodule in the middle of that area...it is not troilite though from appearance?
