13.3 grams. L6
TKW 407 kg. Fall not observed. Found 20 January 1977, West of Allan Nunatak on the edge of the Polar plateau, Victoria Land, Antarctica.
Bernd writes:
Usually Antarctic meteorites are not available to the private collector
but ALHA 76009 is an exception because of its high total known weight of
407 kg. My quadrangular collection piece has a weathered crust and there
are rusty halos around the numerous FeNi specks. I acquired this specimen
from Walter Zeitschel on Sep 15, 1987. |

The word Nunatak - as far as I know - means a rocky formation splitting an icestream in two parts. So, in this very special case, it points to the glacial transport and finally deposit of the meteoritical matter by a flowing glacier. Even the pic looks like that.
Great and rare piece, Bernd. |
