David writes:
Imilac meteorite found by night!

Last february a team of 8 meteorite friends went to Atacama again to search for meteorites. José Vicente Casado, Ion Ander Lanzas, Emma Ardanaz, Josep Maria Bosch, Javier Alvarez, Francisco Galvez, Carlos Alonso and me. We found 49 meteorites in 14 days, ranging 6g to 47kg. We visited the Imilac strewn field for three days and after spending the second entire day finding nice pieces José Vicente suggested we hunt by night. At first I thought it was a crazy idea, but accepted, as did all the colleagues.

What a magical night! There was no wind, 10ºC, the absolute silence, the full moon accompained us all time, but the milky way was easily visible. We saw Omega Centauri with the unaided eye...and found a lot of interesting pieces. I will never forget that night! It was the dream of an amateur astronomer and meteorite lover. Imagine it: searching for meteorites with a metal detector while you watch the wonderful southern sky !!

I found this small meteorite at 22:40 local time on February 20. I don’t very much like iron meteorites - I love LL3’s - but now this is one of my favorite meteorites. Great idea Jose Vicente!!

Francisco used his DSLR to take 10 to 25 second exposures and capture this magical night.

Photo 4 looks like you are on the surface of Mars! I will have to put this area on the list of one of my future searches. Exploring the spectacular starry southern hemisphere, along with looking for Imilac; what could be better?
