COMPLETE SLICE OF AN AESTHETIC ABA PANU METEORITE

I love Aba Panu because of the variations seen in the mixing of lithologies. Mark Lyon had a handful of slices including this specimen in Ensisheim last month which I simply had to have. It crossed THAT threshold — and thank goodness it was reasonably priced.

Meteorites with broadly segmented lithologies are not common and Aba Panu, which fell on April 19,2018, is a terrific example. Reportedly it was determined the meteoroid from which it originated was traveling at a cosmic velocity of nearly 13 miles/second (nearly 75,000 kilometers/hour) before exploding over southwestern Nigeria. What’s difficult to discern in this photo is the amount of metal in the slice. It "seems" the darker of the lithologies is more primitive, but that’s an anecdotal observation from using a lupe. I just love how the contours of this slice along with the big inclusion and the boundary between light and dark lithologies evoke a primitive abstract drawing — but as I said, that’s probably just me as I simply HAD to have this — but this one is to share and hopefully enhance others' appreciation of meteorites as it’s now Lot 107 and available for no reserve in Sotheby’s Meteorite auction which ends tomorrow.

Sotheby’s / Meteorites — Select Specimens from the Moon, Mars Vesta and More / Sale ends Wednesday, July 27th.

When I see a specimen THIS good, I just HAVE to get rid of it within a month. It MUST be SHARED.
