18.55 grams. Iron, IIIAB
TKW 1.55 tons. Observed fall 1867, Chihuahua, Mexico.
Anne writes:
Medium Octahedrite IIIAB, found in an archeological site in northern Chihuahua Mexico in 1867.
Found wrapped in feathers, and with offerings, obviously a very special object for the residents of Casas Grandes.

Here is a timeline I have on Casas Grandes. There is missing time from 1880-1886 and the piece should have gone to the BMNH but somehow the Smith got it. Anyone else have details how that came to pass?
1200 * Casas Grandes Settled
1450 * Casas Grandes abandoned after many wars, most move on to form the Pueblo Tribe
1565 * Spanish discover Casas Grandes site
A few years before 1867- Meteorite is discovered by neighboring townperson Teodoro Alvera
1867 * First report by explorer Edmond Tareyre who was part of a Casas Grandes ruins excavation but never saw the meteorite
1870 *Don Enrico Mueller, director of the mint in Chihuahua, takes custody from neighboring townspeople
1873 - William Pierson from the U.S. Consul at El Paso (along with two other men named Angerstein and Leroy) claims to have made arrangements to purchase it from Mueller and informs the State Department he will have it in his custody in 15 days. Smithsonian requests a slice.

I have a friend in Tucson who was in Casas Grandes area a couple of months ago to see the Mata Ortiz pottery, and she met some of the local people who are looking forward to a piece of the meteorite which is supposed to be returned to the village for a display. |
