26.6 grams. Type H3-5
Roberto writes:
Earth's newest space rock! Cranfield (prov) fell on April 27th, 2022, just east of Nachez, Mississippi. It was a daytime fireball that fell at 8:03am local time and was accompanied by sonic booms and caught on camera. It was witnessed in three states.
Matt Stream and I arrived in the strewnfield on April 30th and made our first discovery on May 1st! This will be a small fall with a very low TKW. The original mass was believed to be around 90 lbs. Which, after ablation, would likely mean only about 4-5 lbs made it to ground. The dense forest will likely eat up most of it. To date, only about 420g have been found.
This 26.6g fragment is my first official find. It is part of the, roughly, 215g stone that hit the highway that runs through Cranfield. The original mass shattered on impact with the highway and was likely run over by several cars, making it both a hammer stone and the current main mass. Matthew Stream was first to discover pieces of this particular stone. Subsequent fragments were found soon after by myself, Steve Arnold (Meteorite Men), and Jody and Cameron Smith. |
