What is a thin section? What do all the colors mean?
|
This section. Eucrite-unbr
TKW 8 kg. Fall observed 9 July 2014, Guelmim-Es-Semara, Morocco.
Zsolt writes:
Tirhert is a fresh and fantastic witnessed-fall Eucrite which fell in 2014Jul 9 in Guelmim-Es-Semara, Morocco.
The cross-polarized images are at 100X magnification. They show many interesting colorful pyroxenes and plagioclase (a form of feldspar, often twinned).
The overall texture is equigranular, but plagioclase occurs as aggregates of multiple subgrains, and some plagioclase contains clusters of tiny pyroxene inclusions. Pyroxenes show exsolution lamellae and mosaicism. Plagioclase is white or white-gray.
This rare Thin Section was made by a colleague in my Company and it was easy ground and polished.
