What is a thin section?       What do all the colors mean?
Thin section between crossed polarizers.   Martian (augite basalt)

TKW 149.4 grams. Fall not observed. Purchased 2013, Morocco.

Don't miss the zoomable hi-res picture on Flicker.

Solar writes:
In this thin section, my first taken with the Nikon D810 combined with the LMScope adapter, the augite grains are clearly visible in the lower portion. Indeed, the lower eighth of the thin section seems distinct from the upper.

A total of 45 images make up the mosaic.

Seeing your sections detailed on such a large scale is really unique and stunning. This augite basalt material is a unique and different than the typical Martian basalts, and stands outside the normal SNC model. Outstanding section!!!

Another fantastic and sharp image, this one filled with with beautiful, rapidly cooled igneous crystals likely from a Martian volcano! Thanks, S!
