Pierre-Marie writes:
A mass of about 700 kilograms was discovered in Russia, 145 miles south Krasnojarsk, in 1749. In 1767, the famous german naturalist Peter Simon Pallas, was invited by Catherine II of Russia to become a professor at the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences. From 1768 to 1774, Pallas led an expedition to Central Russia. In 1772, he examined a strange mass of 680 kilograms of iron and minerals. The mass was sent to St Petersburg for study. Pallas never considered it as a meteorite. Chladni, in 1794, admitted that this mass was from outer space and the term of Pallasite was given to this class of meteorites, the name dedicated to the P.S. Pallas discovery.
